The Choice Between Life and Death
When endeavoring to evaluate the required choice between life and death and to contemplate time and eternity, a living human being must first face up to the question as to whether a Supreme Being exits. The reality of personal belief as to the existence or non-existence of the Supreme Being we refer to as "God" cannot be avoided. Personal beliefs are expressed in words in the language understandable in various geographical locations (India, China, Europe, North America, Middle East, etc.). The statements, "I don't know," I haven't decided," "I'm not sure," "I can't imagine God," etc. can only be similar statements to the effect that there is no Supreme Being in the known universe. At any point in time, a human being either believes in God or totally rejects the existence of any form of Supreme Being.
For those who actually believe in a Supreme Being, the most obvious questions that arise are: "What is this God like?" "Where did God come from?" "How does God interact with humanity"? "What does God expect from human beings?" "Is there actually an eternal spiritual life after the physical death of the body?" "How will this afterlife be experienced?" "What must I do to be assured of eternal life in the presence of God?" Is such eternal life based upon good works or upon faith alone?" "How can I be sure?"
Each of these questions have been forever answered and written down in every language that exists on Planet Earth. But, before looking at the answers, it will be very enlightening to consider the question of non-existence of any type of Supreme Being.
If there is no God, where did humans and all other life forms in the known universe come from? Where did the primordial elements hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, gold, silver, nickel, sodium, and the other eighty-five primordial elements come from? Where did any of the elements and energy come from which resulted in the big bang? Where did the strong nuclear force that binds together sub-atomic particles of matter come from? Where did any form of nuclear energy come from? Where did plant, bacterial, animal and human life forces come from since such life forces are not composed of the elements or anything else that exists within time, distance and space? Where did DNA coding come from? Where did human love, hate, lust, reason, imagination, empathy, mercy, humility, arrogance, pride, trust, anger, patience, and other human traits, characteristics and emotions come from? In the absence of a Supreme Being, such questions cannot be answered.
Where did the billions of trillions of cubic miles of hydrogen from which stars were formed come from? If stars formed the primordial elements within their cores while converting hydrogen to helium due to internal heat and pressure, the universe would have to be billions of trillions of Earth years old (not fourteen billion or so) in order to produce the existing ratio of hydrogen gas to the sum total of the primordial elements. In order for there to have been "a big bang," and evolution by random chance without purpose, design or order, all the primordial elements would have to have pre-existed the big bang. All life forces would have to have evolved from nothingness and then replicate by DNA coding which involves at the bacterial level millions of diverse complex protein molecules arranged in a precise chronological sequence (which is absolutely mathematically impossible; consider the odds of correctly guessing by random chance just six lottery numbers against the odds of random chance producing six million DNA molecular structures in an exact chronological sequence).
The big bang, Darwinian theories of evolution, spontaneous generation of all life forces, simplicity evolving into complexity, and random chance positioning of all planetary and interstellar orbits including billions of stars represent the most idiotic thought patterns that have ever evolved within human imagination because such explanations for the creation of the universe and all its life forms are contrary to molecular structure, the substance of energy, DNA coding, 21st century biology, physics, chemistry, astrology, the strong and weak nuclear forces, electromagnetic energy, and beyond all mathematical possibilities; and do not offer any explanation whatsoever for the life forces constituting plant, insect, animal and human life forces because such life forces are not composed of any type matter or energy found within the entire universe.
Consequently, there does exist a Supreme Being and creator of the universe and all its life forms. To refuse to accept this elementary and patently obvious truth is the height of intellectual ignorance and is founded upon personal pride, arrogance, and self-worship. Unfortunately, among humans who do believe in a Supreme Being, there are multiple and diverse beliefs as to the nature of the Supreme Being and human afterlife which have spawned a dozen or so popular world religions. Regardless of the specific religion being considered, all world religions are based upon one of three basic beliefs: eternal life through a series of reincarnations and eventual oneness with the universe; eternal life in God's presence based upon personal good works between birth and physical death of the body; and eternal life in God's presence pursuant to a divine sacrifice to atone for personal transgressions against God and fellow humans. There is absolutely no proof whatever to support reincarnation or eternal life earned by good works. On the other hand, there exists an enormous collection of hard evidence to support the belief in eternal life through a divine sacrificial lamb. Such evidence has been collected and preserved over a period of more than thirty centuries in a document known as the "Holy Bible." The Bible does not provide any information as to God's origin other than declare Him to be the ever living creator of all energy, matter and motion.
In brief summary, the Bible declares that God is an all powerful and creative Spirit that exists outside of that which He has created and indwells all of His creation at the same time. God created life forms higher in power, wisdom and beauty than humans which are referred to as "angels" who, like humans, possess a free will and can personally choose to worship and serve God or to reject Him and collectively wage spiritual warfare against Him. The original rebelling angel is named Lucifer and then referred to as "Satan, the adversary of God." The angels who joined Satan's rebellion will at some point in the future, along with Satan, be confined within an eternal inferno of fire and brimstone (the lake of fire). God created humans from the same elements as the dust of Earth and breathed into their nostrils the "breath of eternal life." Satan convinced the first humans to join his rebellion against God and they were cast out of the garden paradise God had created for their habitation and their physical bodies were appointed to death.
The first man and woman, in a fallen state, lost their original immortality and could only pass on to their offspring their rebellious spirit and physical death. God determined to redeem humans back to Himself because in a fallen state it was impossible for humans to redeem themselves. Through a divine sacrificial lamb, God dispensed justice and mercy simultaneously such that all humans who accepted the sacrificial lamb could be restored to their unfallen state. God incarnated a portion of Himself into human form (His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ) and then Jesus offered up Himself as humanity's sacrificial lamb. Belief in and acceptance of Jesus Christ triggers a new spiritual birth ("being born again") which results in love and obedience to God as "our Heavenly Father."
Jesus was born of a virgin human female and lived on Earth as a man until His willing sacrifice of Himself. To demonstrate His divinity, He healed all manner of disease and physical handicaps, raised the dead, and cast out demonic spirits. He did not just heal a handful of people using positive thinking or magic. He healed the blind, deaf, dumb, sick, and handicapped in entire cities before tens of thousands of eye witnesses. He cast out demons and raised people from the dead in the presence of numerous eye witnesses. The wind and waves obeyed His voice. He walked upon the sea and fed more than five thousand people with a handful of bread and fish on two occasions. He taught humanity the true nature of God and eternal life in God's kingdom. Three days following His sacrificial death, God raised Him from the dead and gave Him all power in heaven and Earth. Before returning to God's dwelling place ("heaven"), Jesus taught his twelve apostles for forty days and was seen and identified by over five hundred humans. He will return to Earth to rule over the nations for one thousand years as "King of Kings and Lord of Lords." All humans who rejected Him will appear before God for personal judgment and then join Satan and his angels in the lake of fire. The birth, life, ministry, sacrificial death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are extremely well documented facts. Those who deny Him will continue to deny Him in the face of irrefutable facts; like the Pharisees and religious leaders wanted to kill a man He raised from the dead in order to destroy the evidence of His divinity.
The Bible contains hundreds of prophecies that were fulfilled precisely as spoken and written down over thirty centuries thereby establishing its veracity and reliability. Roughly one third of the population of Earth are Christians (believers in Jesus Christ) and billions of dead Christians are awaiting the resurrection of life into God's eternal kingdom.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
The Central Question:
What does the Law of Moses (with reference to the Ten Commandments) have to do with accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Personal Savior, Near Kinsman, Redeemer, High Priest, and Friend?
Nothing!!! More than a dozen times (see Romans, Ephesians, Galatians, the Four Gospels, Acts, Hebrews, and Revelation) we are told in the simplest of terminology that the law of Moses was given to make humans aware of their fallen and hopeless state of being (a schoolmaster to point us to Jesus Christ) and that "by the law is the knowledge of sin" and that by the works of the law no human will be justified in the sight of God because fallen humanity is totally incapable of "keeping the law." The law cannot save anyone but rather condemns the human race and appoints all humanity to die physically for transgressing the laws of God.
Jesus Christ who knew no sin whatsoever became our sacrificial lamb to redeem us back to God "as though we had never sinned." We were deemed by God to be in Christ as he died on the cross to atone for the sins of all humanity for all time (past, present and future). Therefore we were considered "dead with Christ and then resurrected with Christ to live forever in the Kingdom of God." Believers in Christ cannot sin because we are not under law but rather under grace because when the law does not apply there cannot be sin because by God's definition "where there is no law, there is no sin." Every human sins in thought, word or deed every day but sin is not imputed to those who believe in and have accepted Jesus Christ as their sacrificial lamb. This does not mean that grace is a license to sin because as believers humans consider God as "Heavenly Father" thereby striving with their entire mind, soul and body to please God. We love, worship and serve God out of love and respect and not fear of the penalty imposed by the law given to Moses because "we are not under law but under grace. Law and grace are never, ever mixed in the Holy Bible.
Q1: Is Jesus and Almighty God one and the same?
In the 8th chapter of the Proverbs, verses 22-30, we catch a glimpse of the Son who later enters the stream of humanity as born of a virgin and cradled in a manger:
“The Lord possessed Me in the beginning of His way, before the works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth. While as yet He had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. When He prepared the heavens, I was there: when He set a compass upon the face of the depth: when He established the clouds above: when He strengthened the fountains of the deep: when He gave to the sea His decree, that the waters should not pass His commandment: when He appointed the foundations of the earth: then I was by Him, as one brought up with Him: and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him.”
In the Gospel of the Apostle, John, at chapter 3, verse 13, the Son tells a confused religious leader that the Son is on earth and in heaven simultaneously:
“And no man has ascended up to heaven, but the Son of man that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”
John further describes the oneness of God and the Son in chapter 1, verses 1-5, 10-14; and 18:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shined in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not........He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth........No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared him.”
At the baptism of the Son by John The Baptist, the trinity was demonstrated:
“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven was opened and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, You are by beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.” (St. Luke 3:21-22)
The disciples of Jesus were confused concerning the Godhead and asked Him to show them the Father (God):
“Philip said to Him, Lord, show us the Father and that will be sufficient. Jesus said unto him, Have I been such a long time with you and yet you have not known me, Phillip? Those who have seen me have seen the Father, so why do you say, Show us the Father? Do you not understand that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father who dwells in Me, He does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me; else believe Me for the very works sake.” (John, 14:8-11)
Paul, the Apostle opens his letter to the Jewish Christians with this declaration:
“God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in times past unto our fathers through the prophets, has in these last days spoken unto us by His Son Whom He has appointed heir of all things, by Whom also He made the worlds; Who, being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.”(Hebrews 1:1-3)
These passages, among many others, plainly state that God and His Son and God's Spirit are one and the same and constitute the Godhead. Thus, the Book of Genesis in giving an account of the creation of the universe, and more specifically humans, records this conversation within the Godhead:
“And God said, Let Us make man in Our Own image, after Our Likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So, God created man in His Own Image, in the Image of God created He him; male and female created He them.”(Genesis 1:26-27) “And the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soull.”(Genesis 2:7)
Q2: Does the Bible predict a nuclear war?
Yes. In Zechariah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and II Peter:
“And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord shall smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongues shall consume away in their mouths.” (Zechariah, chapter 14, verse 12)
“The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly......the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; it shall fall and not rise again.” (Isaiah, chapter 24, verse 19) “The earth mourns and fades away, the world languishes and fades away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore, the curse has devoured the earth and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.” (Isaiah, chapter 24, verses 4-7)
“I beheld the earth, and lo, it was without form and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.” (Jeremiah, chapter 4, verses 23-25)
“Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel; so that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.” (Ezekiel, chapter 38, verses 19-20).
“And I will send a fire upon Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel, chapter 39, verse 6)
“And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search. And the passengers that pass through the land, when they see a man's bone, then shall they set a marker by it, till the burying crews have buried it in the valley of Hamongog. " (Ezekiel, chapter 39, verses 14-16)
“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with a fervent heat.”(II Peter, chapter 3, verse 12)
Q3: Where do angels come from and was Lucifer (Satan) an archangel?
"How have you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!.....For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High. (Isaiah, 14:12-14)
".......Thus saith the Lord God: You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. You have been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the sardius, topaz, and diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you in the day that you were created. You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so; you were upon the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until iniquity was found in you." (Ezekiel, 28:12-15)
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (Revelation, 12:7-9) These Scriptures indicate that God created angels and that Lucifer was an angel of extraordinary beauty, wisdom and power.
Q4: Is hell and the lake of fire the same place?
"And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their own works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."(Revelation 20:13-15) No. They are not the same physical place.
Q5: Will the planet Earth be destroyed by God?
Yes. "Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat......Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness." (II Peter, chapter 3, verses 12-13)"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I, John, saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." (Revelation, chapter 21, verses 1-2)
Q6: Does God see and consider things and events as humans do?
No. "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and unto our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah, chapter 55, verses 7-9) God views human souls as eternal entities temporarily housed in a physical body appointed to physical death. Every human begins to die at birth. The dying process may be very brief or may occur over a single century which is a blink of the eye when compared to eternity. Each individual human during the dying process can freely chose to "love other humans as his/her self" and to worship God "in spirit and in truth."
Why humans do what they do:
The rough pathway of mortal time is strewn with lust, envy, pride, self-worship, greed, gluttony, selfishness, status seeking, envy and covetousness. A small minority of humans are philanthropists who share their wealth such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Such philanthropists have everything that money can buy and do not derive any particular pleasure nor satisfaction in simply amassing more and more personal wealth. Rather, they truly enjoy simply giving generously to various charities and to benefit the poor and underprivileged.
Those who are moderately wealthy generally want to accumulate more wealth and those who struggle for wealth and status anxiously and hurriedly traverse the brief time between birth and death. The plain truth is that each human comes naked from the womb and returns to the dust from which he/she sprang and can carry nothing into eternity that was accumulated by any means or effort. So, what is the point of seeking to accumulate wealth? A rusty old Chevy will get a person to the same destination as a Silver Cloud Rolls Royce. A comfortable two-bedroom apartment will accommodate two people as well as a thirty room mansion. A twenty dollar outfit will serve the same purpose as a thousand dollar hand tailored suit. So, why do humans spend their brief lives chasing after wealth and status symbols? Primarily because they worship only themselves. Jesus said that God feeds the birds and clothes the flowers with beauty and fragrance. To spend one's life seeking wealth and status is "chasing after the wind."
Jesus Christ asked the question which echoes throughout eternity: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or, what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26 KJV)
Jesus spoke the essence of striving after wind: The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: and he thought within himself saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said: This will I do; I will pull down my barns and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul: Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink and be merry. But God said unto him, thou fool, this night thy soul is required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? (Luke 16:20 KJV)
Jesus further gave this glimpse into the Kingdom of God: Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was hungry, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, and fed thee? Or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? Or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me. (Matthew 25:34 KJV)
